Most
things that we think are impossible, are impossible
merely because we think that they are impossible.
Isn't it amazing how we are not sure of what we can do yet we are absolutely
certain of what we can't do. It is "I am not sure that I can do this" but "I
know that I can't do that" It seems to be easier to limit our abilities than
to extend them. Much of this attitude comes from our fear of failure, our
fear of what we think other people might think, or say, about us if we do
not succeed.
There is an irrational belief amongst adults that you have to get it right
first time and if you don't then you have failed. We may try something once
and if it doesn't work out first time then we write it off as impossible.
Well I can't think of many things that we are able to right first time. Most
things have to be learned and a natural process of learning is that you may
not always get the result that you expected.
This fear of failure leads to the excuse of ‘I can't’, when most of the time
you really mean "I won't" or "I don't want to" or "I am afraid to". It is
less threatening and less risk to say I can't. You cannot be blamed for not
doing something that you "can't" do. However constantly saying "I can't"
leads eventually to the belief that you can't and then you won't even try.
What is the point of trying to do something that can't be done.
There are two primary attitudes that determine our ability and willingness
to be adventurous and to extend our capabilities. One is positive, this is
an "I CAN" state of mind. CAN means a "Confident Attitude Now" and gives you
the courage to try new things. This confident attitude is developed when you
review your past and acknowledge all the successes in your life, when you
realise that there was a time that you could not even do everything that you
now do with ease, you had to learn to do it and you did.
The other attitude is negative, this is an "I CAN'T" state of mind. CAN'T
means a "Conditioned Attitude of Negative Thinking" This attitude severely
limits your opportunity for growth and development and tends to take the fun
out of life. This negative and self defeating attitude is developed when you
focus on all the "failures" and embarrassing moments of your life and fear
that they are going to be repeated if you try something new.
How many opportunities have you missed out on by thinking "I can't do that"
or "That's not possible" only to find out that someone else is doing the
very thing that you thought was impossible.
Change your mind about yourself and your capabilities. By identifying and
acknowledging your past achievements you can develop confidence in yourself
and build a solid "success foundation" from which to launch your future.
Whenever you are faced with a new opportunity or challenge ask yourself this
"What would I do if I thought that it was possible, that it could be done
and that I could do it?" change your state from "impossibility thinking" to
"possibility thinking" remember that "Most things that we think are
impossible, are impossible merely because we think that they are
impossible."
