Seek your sense of significance
in your own actions and contributions.
Every person has a need to feel
significant, to feel that they matter, to feel that someone cares, but we
have been so well conditioned not to brag, not to blow our own trumpet, that
we have become very good at seeing how great other people are and how
insignificant we are. Because we have been conditioned to think less of
ourselves and more of others we now try to achieve a sense of significance
through our association with others.
Someone in the country does something
great and suddenly you are a proud citizen. Why? What have you contributed
to that achievement? Rather than be a proud citizen because someone from, or
in, your country has done something admirable, strive to be proud of your
behaviour and contribution as a citizen. If the reputation of your country
was dependant on your behaviour what reputation would the country have?
You are a proud supporter of your sports
team, really? They win, you feel great. They lose, you feel bad. Why? What
did you contribute to either the win or the loss. Why can't you just
appreciate the game and admire the effort that they put into it. Rather than
being a proud supporter of your team strive to be proud of your behaviour as
a supporter, strive to make the team proud to have you as a supporter.
Instead of trying to achieve a sense of
significance through your association, however loosely, with others, seek
your sense of significance through your own actions and contributions. Seek
your significance in what you do and how you do it. Is your behaviour worth
being proud of? What contribution do you make? What example do you set?
Could other people achieve a sense of significance through their association
with you?
Strive to behave so well that at the end
of every day, you can walk tall knowing that the world is a better place
because you lived today, that people are better off because they met with
you today, that you added value to their lives and that you can say "of all
the people I met today I am proudest of me!"
Remember this, no matter what you do it is
significant, it is important, so learn to Seek your sense of
significance in your own actions and contributions.
