National Braai Day (Heritage Day)

Heritage day is a day that we are supposed to use to remember those hardy pioneers, our forefathers (and mothers to be PC) that created the world that we live in today. And by pioneers I don't just mean that intrepid bunch who set out into the unmapped, unknown (to them) interior in wagons with limited supplies but unlimited spirit, but all those who went before us and created the world as we know it and laid the foundation that we are building on today.

Right or wrong, they did the best that they could within the circumstances at the time and the only reason that we have what we have is because they did what they did.

Just for a moment suspend your political views and acknowledge the achievements of those intrepid explorers. Acknowledge that when I talk about forefathers I am not just talking about your tribe, but the tribe of mankind that was here before us. Acknowledge that everything that you have today is the result of what they did yesterday. We have hospitals, towns, roads, universities, railway, telephone you name it we have it today because those who came before us created it. And as you contemplate the efforts that they made to make a better life for you I want you to ask yourself, if what you are doing and the way that you are doing it will lead to a better life for those who follow you.

Like it or not, we have inherited the heritage left by those who went before us. Neither blame nor praise will make any difference to the way things are it will only affect the way we think about the way things are.

Our responsibility is not to try to relive, or redress, the past, other than to remember it in celebration and awe of, and gratitude for, their achievements Our responsibility is to create the heritage that we will be leaving for those who follow our footsteps so that they too can celebrate our achievements.

We should not so much question why they did what they did. We should question why we are  doing what we are doing.

Be aware that with every action you are creating the heritage that you will leave. How will those who inherit it feel? On future Heritage days, how will your contribution be remembered?

Accept that while you cannot control your inheritance you can, and should, control your legacy. See yourself as the custodian of the future and rather than just taking the day off as another "national braai day" use the time wisely to reflect on the importance of your role in the future of this nation.
