You might not be doing what you like, but
you can learn to act as if you like what you are
doing.
I often get
asked, "If I am to live an EMPOWERED life, shouldn’t I be doing what I
like?" My answer is always the same. "You might not always be able to do
what you like but you can always act as if you like what you are doing"
This story will
illustrate the power of pretending to enjoy what you are doing.
One Saturday
morning just as Tom was preparing to head out for an exciting day he got the
really bad news that he had to paint the garden fence before he went
anywhere. "But that’ll take all day" he complained. "Not if you put some
effort in" was the reply.
Here was a
problem. Tom did not want to paint the fence but if he didn’t he would be in
big trouble. Tom was expecting some of his friends to come around and if
they found him with chores to do they would mock him and tempt him to go and
play.
So Tom decided
that since he had to paint the fence he might as well enjoy it and the
sooner he got finished the sooner he could get away. So getting the paint
ready he started slapping it on the fence with great energy.
He had hardly
started before one of his friends arrived. "Hey Tom, what are you doing, we
arranged to go fishing this morning" "Sure" said Tom "But that was before I
found out that I could paint the fence." slapping the paint on with great
enjoyment.
It looked like
so much fun that soon his friend asked "Hey Tom can I have a go?" Sure said
Tom "Grab a brush" Well, the two of them were having so much fun that when
the next friend arrived he too wanted to join in so Tom found another brush
for him and between the three of them they had the job done in no time at
all and had a great time doing it.
The moral of
the story is that "If it looks like fun others will want to join you. If it
looks like pain others will want to avoid you." so just for today act as if
you like what you are doing and notice the difference.
To live your best life be true to the YOU, that you want to be.
Live with passion. Change your life from making a living to making a difference.
Live up to the reputation that you want to have.
