The greatest gift that you can give your children
is a sense of their own self worth and an understanding
that their rewards in life will be in direct proportion
to the value of their contribution to life.
All too often we blame our
circumstances for our position in life. We resent what we do and therefore
resist doing it or we do the least we can and then complain that our rewards are
so small. Even worse we justify our misery by saying that this is our lot in
life and blaming fate.
It is not our circumstances but
our belief that this is our lot in life that causes distress. The story of SB
Fuller should illustrate this. Now SB Fuller was a prominent business man in
America back in the sixties. He either owned outright or had controlling
interest in eight companies yet he was one of seven children born to an
impoverished tenant farmer. He started working at the age of five. By the time
he was nine he was driving mules. This was not unusual in a community where the
people accepted poverty as their lot.
Now SB Fuller's mother did not
accept that poverty was the way of life. She knew that there was something
fundamentally wrong with the fact that they were barely surviving in a world of
plenty. She knew that they were not poor because of circumstance but because her
husband had never developed a desire to be rich. No-one in, either her or, his
family had ever developed a desire to be rich. Sure they might talk with envy
about the rich folk, but they had resigned themselves to being poor.
Luckily, SB Fuller took heed of
his mothers words and he decided to be rich. He realised that his rewards would
be in proportion to the value of his contribution. He went to work as a salesman
selling soap door to door, the best job he could get at the time. He had almost
no education, came from a poor community but he had a strong sense of self worth
and knew he could make a valuable contribution. After twelve years he bought the
company that made the soap.
History is full of stories like
this. People who rise above their circumstances to achieve greatness. The great
tragedy of life is that "Society" has the tendency to relegate you to a position
in life, you are labelled according to your background and "Society's"
perception of you. Well that label only becomes true when you decide to wear it,
when you decide to accept "Society's" judgement as final. Never do that, what do
they know anyway? What do they know of your hopes and dreams, of your
aspirations?
One of the most important things
that you can do for yourself or for any other person is to give a sense of hope,
a sense of possibility, to create the belief that they can grow beyond their
circumstances. Let people know that they can have whatever it is that they want
in life if only they are prepared to do what it takes to get it.
You have a responsibility to prepare your children for the future so remember
that "The greatest gift that you can give your children is a sense of their
own self worth and an understanding that their rewards in life will be in direct
proportion to the value of their contribution to life."
