Flying the FLAG

I wonder if you realise just how important your behaviour is in terms of your reputation and the reputation of the people you are associated with?

In my seminars I always tell people that they must realise that they are the face of their organisation, their family, their profession and their country. When we deal with you we judge all those associated with you by the way that we feel about our experience with you.

This was really brought home to me listening to the staff on the flight from Dubai to London. They were discussing passengers and some of the experiences that they had had, and they were talking specifically about how much alcohol some passengers drink.

One of the stewardesses said that the South Africans were the worst. She recalled a flight were a group of South Africans literally drank the bar dry and her words were "When they had finished everything else they even drank the sherry!"

Now sitting there listening to this I did not feel like jumping up and declaring "I am a South African" I just wondered what had happened to the "Proudly South African" theme.

Now you can sit there and say that this is unfair, how can she judge a whole nation by the behaviour of these few people, and you know, you are right, it is unfair. However that is the way that it is. Just think how you pass judgement. Let's say that you go to a restaurant and you get bad service. Do you go away saying "That waiter was terrible" or do you say "That restaurant is terrible"? You see you judge the group by your experience with a member of that group.

I think that it is important to remember that each one of us has the responsibility to be careful of the impression that we give other people. How you behave does make a difference, to you and to those associated with you.

Realise that bad behaviour gets noticed sooner, remembered longer and talked about more, than good behaviour. However good behaviour creates a meaningful contribution to the interconnectedness and interdependence of all humanity. Good behaviour makes you and those experiencing your behaviour feel better.

From now on ask yourself "How will I be remembered?" "How will my behaviour affect those who come after me?" "Am I acting in a way that will enhance my reputation and the reputation of my family, or my employer, or my profession, or my country?" "Am I flying the flag?" "Am I PROUDLY ......?
