We've got a beautiful country.

I was at a talk last week given by a guy from Australia and he made the standard comment that we've got a beautiful country, many of those in the audience agreed. However when the talk was over and the audience left you could see that many of them didn't give a hoot about our "beautiful country", it was evident by the way they just left their litter behind.

They left that venue in such a bad state that it would have taken a major clean up before it would be suitable for use again. Now it's not that there were no litter bins it's that there were too many litter bugs. People so wrapped up in their own importance and so selfish that they were totally unconcerned about the consequences of their actions. (By the way, it was a talk on self development so I am not sure if it says something about the speaker or about the audience)

I live in Nigel, and just down the road, in easy walking distance from my house, is the Blesbok Spruit, a little river. Leading up to the river is a "wonderful" patch of undeveloped natural veld. It used to be quite pleasant to walk there in the evenings. Not so anymore as certain citizens of Nigel have decided that it is more convenient to dump their junk in the veld than to make the effort to take it to the dump. If you take a walk there now you have to wend your way through a field of others peoples rubbish.

I have had the pleasure of travelling through most of South Africa. I have also had the pain and displeasure of observing the disrespect with which our "beautiful" country is treated. I cannot think of one place that I have been to that is not defiled by litter. Bain's Pass is a really remote and very beautiful and historic pass yet, at the top, in a viewing area, some inconsiderate and insensitive person had emptied their ashtray and taken all the litter out of their car and just dumped it on the ground. (there is a litter bin provided)

There is a common "joke" that our National flower is the plastic shopping bag. This isn't funny, this is tragic. Everywhere are signs of our disregard and disrespect for our "beautiful country" The litter, the waste, the stripping of natural resources, the lack of concern for the future is quite evident.

I'll bet that these same people who, quite unconcernedly, trash our "beautiful" country would have a hernia if someone was to dump junk in their yard, or in their house or heaven forbid, in their car.

Teach your children to respect nature by showing respect for nature. Teach them to ponder on it's magnificence not to plunder it's resources. Clean up behind you. Take your litter home and dispose of it responsibly. You do not have to solve the problem but you must ensure that you are not part of the problem.

We did not inherit this country, nor do we own it, we merely live here and hold it in trust for future generations. How do you think that we will be judged for our actions? Will future generations inherit a treasure or a tragedy?

If you believe that we do live in a beautiful country how about treating it with the respect that it deserves and showing your gratitude for this gift of nature.
