BEWARE PHISHING!

What is phishing. Phishing is when unscrupulous, unethical and downright dishonest people try to con you into giving them your personal details which they then use for their own illegal purposes.

Do not under any circumstances give any of your personal details to anyone over the phone unless you initiated the call and you know who you are talking to, or you are absolutely certain that you know, and can trust, the other person.

Just recently I have received calls from:

> "Lawyers" claiming that they have a debt that has been handed over for collection and they just want to verify my contact details; and

> "The Receiver of Revenue" Just updating records, could I please verify my contact details.

My response is always, well what records do you have. No No they say they need that from me. I then say send me a letter to the address that you have, goodbye, and then I put the phone down.

Just think about it. If they were really who they said they were they would be able to give you all the records. But here is my advice. Even if they have some of your records DO NOT give them anything more. Tell them to write to you and DO NOT give them your address.

What really amazes me is that these calls are made by people who really seem to be very nice and who very possibly have friends and family. I wonder if it bothers them that they are doing something illegal and that could cause their victim much suffering.

Has our society deteriorated to such low levels of morals and ethics that people will actually take jobs to commit crimes on behalf of their "employers" or are we so desperate to get some money that we will trash our ethics and personal values to earn a paycheque.

My question to these people is this. "How would you feel if someone did, to a member of your family or one of your fiends, what you are trying to do to me?" "What would you do if someone ripped your family or friends off?" If you would not like that then why are you doing it to me?

If you know of anyone who is involved in these, or any other, illegal activities then you have a moral responsibility to report them to the authorities.

Let's stand together to build a nation on trust and respect for one another. But while we are doing that do not trust anyone you do not know with your personal details. Tell them to go phish in another pond.
