With your thoughts you make your life.
You create the emotional reality of your life by the way that you interpret events and circumstances. The one thing that is certain is that you seldom know what is real, you only know what you think is real. The problem, is that your response to any situation is always based on your perception of reality.
Let me give you an example. Now I don't know where you live but here where I live taxi drivers do not have a reputation as courteous drivers. In fact the opposite is true, they have a reputation as shockingly bad drivers. Based on this reputation you tend to think the worst of taxi drivers. So, there you are travelling peacefully to work one morning, when a taxi accelerates past you only to slam to a screeching halt about 50 meters ahead. (They do this regularly)
You, being the alert driver that you are, manage to take avoiding action, while loudly complaining about the taxi driver's inability to drive properly. Most likely bought his drivers licence, the taxi is probably stolen too. You are so incensed with his behaviour that you swerve out from behind him, and narrowly avoid an oncoming car. Where are the traffic cops when you need them, you complain. That guy should be taken off the road.
Thoroughly rattled and angry you continue to work. When you get there you tell everyone you see about the near accident you had because of the bad driving of the taxi driver. (and so you reinforce taxi drivers reputations) You are in a bad mood all day fuming and stewing over the morning's incident. If you could get hold of that taxi driver you would tell him a thing or two. Pity you didn't get his number plate so that you could report him.
That evening you are meeting a friend for coffee and you can't wait to tell him about your dreadful incident that morning.
However before you can tell your story your friend tells you that it the luckiest day of his life. Why? you ask. And he tells you that his three year old daughter was nearly run over this morning.
He was getting ready to go to work and had opened the gate when his wife had to go into the house to answer the phone. He thought that his daughter had also gone inside so he got into his car to reverse out. What he did not know was that she had run out into the road after her ball
That's when he heard the screech of brakes. If that taxi driver had not been so alert and had not had such quick reactions there would have been a tragedy.
You suddenly realise that this mornings incident had taken place right outside your friends house. You were so upset that you hadn't paid attention.
Now you know why the driver slammed to a halt without warning in front of you. Suddenly your attitude toward the taxi driver changes from wanting to kill him to wanting to kiss him.
To take control of your life you must learn to question your "reality" "Is it true?" "Do I know enough to make this decision or to come to this conclusion?" "Why do I feel this way?" "What effect did the situation have on me?" "How important is it really?" Learn to question your thoughts because "With your thoughts you make your life."
