A pat on the back has the effect of filling the tank of enthusiasm.
The one thing that everyone needs is recognition. Everyone needs to know that their efforts are appreciated.
Now there are some that will say things like "the opinions of others don't matter" all I can say about those people is that either they have no understanding of life and are total social misfits or they lie about other stuff too.
The opinions of others do matter and, we being a social species, need to know that our efforts are recognised and appreciated. We need to feel important, that we matter and that what we do makes a positive difference. In other words we need to feel significant.
Now while we should all be internally driven, and in fact we are, everything that we do is to satisfy an internal need, and do things because they need to be done and/or it is our responsibility to do them, it is really nice to know that our efforts have not gone unnoticed.
Our tank of enthusiasm can soon run dry if we feel that our efforts go unnoticed or are not appreciated, we soon start wondering why we bother, no-one seems to care. This soon leads to resentment, of the task and those we are doing the task for. We risk developing "victim mentality" and start questioning "Why me?". The next step is that we start looking for an escape route and thinking about how we can get out of this situation. (Many relationships are shipwrecked on the rocky coast of "Lack of recognition".)
But. A pat on the back by way of acknowledgement, recognition, thanks and congratulations, has the effect of filling the tank of enthusiasm, of making all your efforts seem worthwhile and of giving you motivation to keep going.
There is not much that is as encouraging as recognition and acknowledgement. It's really what we all strive for. Just think how you feel when you are complimented for good work. Suddenly you feel energised, able to go another round. Just think how you feel when you've done a great job but it's like no-one cares. Suddenly you don't care either.
However, while acknowledgement from others is great, don't wait for someone else to give you a pat on the back. And whatever you do don't use the lack of recognition from others as an excuse to do things badly or not at all. Your pride in yourself should be the deciding factor in your choice of behaviour. So rather that wait for, or rely on others to give you a pat on the back, do it yourself.
You know when you have done a good job. You know that sense of satisfaction you get when the task is done well. Congratulate yourself. Take time to celebrate your ability to do good work. (Even God did this. He looked upon all he had made and saw that it was good.)
Knowing how good you feel when you get acknowledgement, take time to acknowledge the people you work with, or who do things for you. Look for opportunities to congratulate them on a job well done. Look for ways to show your appreciation.
Help people to feel good about themselves because. "People, who feel good about themselves, do good work. People, who get acknowledged for doing good work, feel good about themselves." It's a victorious cycle.
To increase your energy and production levels. To get more done and have fun doing it. To get a sense of value from what you have done. To do good work and feel good about yourself, remember this "A pat on the back has the effect of filling the tank of enthusiasm"
