You cannot think yourself out of a habit that you have
behaved yourself into.
All that a habit is, is an action, good or bad, right or wrong, that you have carried out so many times that you now no longer consciously have to think about what you are doing, you just do it. Habits are an essential part of our day to day functioning. If we did not have habits we would constantly have to relearn everything that we do. If we had to relearn everything every day we wouldn't get very far. We'd be too busy learning.
The reason that habits are essential is that we operate on memory, once we have learned to do something we no longer have to consciously think about doing it. We are in fact a bundle of conditioned responses and live for the most part a "stimulus/response" life. We see, hear, smell, feel or taste something and it immediately generates a response, a learned response.
It is important to realise that you cannot think with what you don't know. But, you will think with what you think you know. The trouble is that all too often we do not take the time to verify the accuracy if what we "know".
The state of your live is totally dependant on your habits for they control everything you do. So if you want to change your life you have to change your habits. Now most of your habits were unconsciously formed, you did not deliberately set out to create them you just did the same thing over and over until it became a habit. Now you must take charge of your live and consciously create the habits that will improve your live.
To change your habits you first have to decide what it is you want to change. Decide on the new behaviour that you want and then consciously choose to behave that way, even if at first it doesn't seem natural just act as if it was. When you have behaved the new way often enough it becomes a habit and as you continue to practice your new habit it eventually becomes strong enough to override the old habit, and you have changed.
There is a saying that practice makes perfect. This is not completely accurate. The saying should really be that "Practice makes permanent". So the more often you do something the easier it gets to do. The key to personal growth is make sure that you are practicing the right behaviour.
The keys to change are;
Identify what it is that you want to change. The easiest way to do this
is to evaluate your life and identify the areas that you are dissatisfied with.
Awareness of the existing situation is critical.
Decide what you want instead of what you've got. Once you have worked out what you are dissatisfied with now describe your preferred situation. You know where you are, now decide where you want to go.
Create an Action Plan. Work out what you have to do to get what you want. There will be things that either you should stop doing or you should do less of or you should start doing or you should do more of.
Take Action. Do, or stop doing, what it is that you have identified. Keep your destination in mind and consciously behave in the new and preferred way that will get you there.
You use your power of thought to work out what you must change but you must use your power to act to create the change. Action is critical because "You cannot think yourself out of a habit that you have behaved yourself into" so behave yourself into the new you. The you, you want to be.
