When I ask this question in my seminars I am often greeted with derisive
laughter and comments like "Celebrate it! Mourn it and complain about it yes but
celebrate, No. You obviously haven't seen my paycheque."
Now your paycheque may not be to your liking but you can change that. Before
we go on however I'd like to ask you something. When you started working here
was your pay cheque too small? Did you deliberately take a job with a low
salary, or was this perhaps the only job you could get? How did you feel when
you got your first pay? I'm prepared to bet that you were either quite excited
or quite relieved, whatever your feeling however, you were happy to get that
cheque.
But let me take you back in time, way, way back to a time when our
forefathers were "hunter gatherers". No corner grocery store. No Malls. No 24hr
convenience store. If they wanted to eat they had to dig it, pick it or kill it.
Imagine the scene, the hunters have left on the hunt and been gone quite a long
time. The women and the children of the clan have remained at home (the cave or
hut) and busy themselves with the daily domestic chores. Every now and then they
anxiously scan the horizon. When will the men be back?
Suddenly a shout rings out. The men are on their way back. There is great
excitement. And when the men return with the spoils of the hunt there is a
celebration. The successful hunt means survival. It means that the foundation
for future generations can be laid. It means life.
Well today we no longer have to kill our food to eat it but we have to pick
it up at the grocery store and dig deep into our pockets to pay for it and we
complain that the rising prices are killing us.
No. Instead of going hunting, you go to work and offer your skills and time in
return for a paycheque. That paycheque is just as important to you and your
family as the meat that the hunter brought back. That paycheque means survival.
It means that the foundation for future generations can be laid. It means life.
Imagine what your life would be like without it.
Celebrate your paycheque no matter what size it is. It means that you are
successful. It means that you are making a contribution. It means that someone
values your skills and time enough to pay you for it. If you celebrate it you
will appreciate it. If you despise it you will waste it.
To live your best life be true to the YOU, that you want to be.
Live with passion. Change your life from making a living to making a difference.
Live up to the reputation that you want to have.
