On A Personal Note - Doing our "moral" bit?

Once again we are doing our "moral" bit. World aids day. 16 days of activism etc. etc. This has been going on for a while now and it doesn't seem to be helping. In fact matters seem to be getting worse. The way I see it our whole approach is wrong. We are not facing the issue we are actually making excuses for the problems and we are hoping that something outside of ourselves can solve the problems we face.

I hear calls that the government must do something about the aids problem. What on earth can the government do, other than have ministers and government officials set a moral example of how to behave, unfortunately this is all too often not the case and the example that they set is definitely not the one to follow.

What we as a nation must face is that the causes of alcohol abuse, family violence and aids is nothing other than irresponsible behaviour on the part of the perpetrators.

Alcohol is not the problem. Irresponsible use of alcohol is the problem.

Aids is not the problem - Irresponsible sexual behaviour is the problem.

Family violence is not the problem - Emotional immaturity and lack of self control is the problem.

We must stop making excuses for bad behaviour and face the actual issue.

The only thing that the government can do is to put measures in place to deal with the fall out of these situations. The government cannot, nor should be expected to, do for you what you should do for yourself.

Now I know that I am preaching to the converted and that you are not guilty of these behaviours but you can help the cause by spreading the message as far and wide as you can.
