Be the Example you wish your children to follow.

I often hear people saying that it is important for children to help around the house and to share in the household "chores" and I agree. What I don't agree with however is that some parents seem to think that their children "owe" it to them to do these chores. These parents arbitrarily allocate chores to the children and then just expect them to be done.

The problem that I have found is that often the chores allocated are those the parents don't like doing and this breaks one of the most important relationship rules. "Never ask anyone to do something that you are not prepared to do yourself."

This allocation of chores often leads to resentment in the children and because they are resentful they resist doing them and look for ways to avoid them. This leads to a lot of friction and conflict in the home.

Here's the best way to get all the necessary "chores" done around the house. Make them fun to do. Make a roster and share the tasks out equally between ALL members of the family and according to each child's ability to do them. The important thing to remember is that you as parent take your turn at every task.

Now here's the really important thing. When it is your turn to do the chores, do them willingly and cheerfully. Do Not grumble and complain about how hard you have to work, of how much you "hate" this job. Your children are watching and learning from you. If you do your chores willingly and cheerfully you will find that there will be less resentment and resistance from your children.
