Beware setting your communication on fire because you are the one who will get burned

The way we communicate with ourselves and others has a tremendous impact on the quality of our relationships and the state of our lives.

There is one thing that we tend to do without thinking that can really cause us a lot of problems with the "meaning" of our communication and that is the use of "emotionally inflammatory" words.

Just take the time to observe become aware of the words that you use and the way that they affect your emotional state.

Now many of the words that we use I can't repeat here as they are really not socially acceptable. (there is your first lesson, if you wouldn't want you children to use these words, or you wouldn't use them in polite company then why are you using them at all?) But let me give you an example.

Lets say that someone has done something that, in our opinion, is not overly bright. We could comment "Would you look at that. Look what that person just did." but often it's more like "Would you look at that b...... idiot! How could anyone be so stupid?"

The first response is fairly neutral emotionally and focuses on behaviour. The second response is emotionally inflammatory and focuses on the person.

It is the second response that will lead to an unpleasant emotional state that is both draining and damaging.

So from today watch what you say, observe how it makes you feel and ask yourself if you really want to feel that way.
