A key skill in creating and maintaining good relationships is communication.

Many conflict situations are caused through misunderstanding and the misunderstanding was caused by poor communication.

It has been said that it is more important to understand than it is to be understood but this is just not true. It is equally important to understand and to be understood.

If you are the one initiating the communication than it is your responsibility to ensure that the person you are speaking to actually understands you. All too often we presume that, because we understand the subject that others also do.

If you are the one being spoken to then it is your responsibility to ensure that you understand. All too often in our eagerness to please or our need to avoid criticism we say that yes we understand when we really have no idea what is going on.

Remember that the response to communication is always based on the interpretation of the recipient and not the intention of the sender.

When a misunderstanding does happen then before you blame to other person for being stupid rather ask them what it was they thought you said. You might well find that they thought that they were doing the right thing and had no intention of doing it wrong or upsetting you.
