Hold an “Old clothes” drive at work and then take all the clothes collected
to an old age home or a centre for the destitute. What you wouldn’t be seen
dead in might just be what keeps someone else alive this winter.
If you have books or magazines that you no longer want contact a school or a
hospice and ask if they can use them before you chuck them out.
It’s coming to winter, there are a lot of people who have to sleep outdoors,
stock up on cheap blankets, it is a gift that could save a life.
Give a smile to everyone you meet. They’re free and make you feel good. - Johan
When you go to the take-away shops buy an extra kiddie meal and give it to
the first person you see on the road. It may cost you R20 extra but the joy
it brings that person and you is priceless. - Alistair
Find out about a children's home in your area and find a few people who are
willing to "adopt" a child by sponsoring their monthly toiletries for a
year. Especially teen-age girls who have particular needs. Maybe you can
throw in a piece of clothing once in a while and sweeties. This will take
+/- R200.00 out of your budget. - Susan
Each time you go shopping at big stores, remember to drop your change into the
SPCA donation tins. Help those that cannot speak for themselves but love you
unconditionally! - Pippa
You notice the “scrappers” rummaging through the weekly collection of rubbish
bins. Why not find out the sort of stuff they collect – yes even they are
“specialists”. Some collect only cardboard, others only metal. Of course
anything else that catches their eye is also snatched up. However they do
specialise. Thus make bundles – separate the cans, bottles, plastics, cardboard,
metal, wood and useable old clothing etc. One can always leave an unopened tin
of something they can eat! - Rick
Sort your rubbish. Keep the paper and cardboard aside. Place them outside the
bin on "Binday" The man with the trolley will gladly load them before the
Municipality arrives. He will not have to search your bin for recycling paper
(hygiene & humanity) Hannie
I’ve started with a grocery week, the week after the end of the month. All my
agents are invited to put any non- perishable foodstuffs from their groceries in
a box in my office. On the Friday morning we drive to the charity of our choice
and donate it to them. It works! The groceries grow by the month! - Fanie
You can collect your old clothes, sometimes you can cook lunch may be for 5 or
10 children and give it to them – Nothando
Remember that the guys dishing out the pamphlets at the robots are doing it to
earn money - instead of begging - when they have dished out all the pamphlets
the job is done - take a pamphlet from them - you do not have to read it - put
it in your Zippy bag for recycling at home. – L Viljoen
Carry a bag of apples in your car for the street children. Never give them
money! That is bad for them, but an apple is good for them. - Johan
Collect all your small change (coppers) in a 2lt coke bottle and when it is full
donate it to your favourite charity. (The bottle holds about R350.00 when full)
- Johan
